A Japanese reel is not sold as "size 4000" — it is sold as 24 CERTATE LT4000-XH. Every letter in that is a specification. Here is how to read Shimano and Daiwa codes, so you know how a reel will fish before you buy it.
Why a Japanese reel has a code instead of a name
A UK reel is usually sold as "size 4000". A Japanese-market reel is sold as 24 CERTATE LT4000-XH, and every part of that is doing a job. It is not marketing. It is a compact spec sheet, and once you can read it you can tell how a reel will fish before you ever pick it up.
This matters more for Japanese domestic market (JDM) tackle than for European-spec gear, because the JDM range is far wider. Shimano and Daiwa both sell shallow, standard and deep spools, and three or four gear ratios, in the same body. Two reels that look identical on a shelf can retrieve at speeds 30% apart.

How to read a Shimano reel code
Shimano codes run in this order: model year → family name → body/spool size → spool depth → gear ratio.
The two-digit year
A leading 21, 22, 24 is the model year of that generation, not the year it was made. "21 Ultegra" is the 2021 redesign, and it stayed in production for years afterwards. It is how you tell one generation from the next, because Shimano reuses family names for decades.
Size numbers
500, 1000, 2000, 2500, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 8000 and upwards. Bigger number, bigger spool and more line. For UK fishing: 500–2000 for light rock fishing, 2500–3000 for bass and general lure work, 4000–5000 for heavier shore work, 8000 and up for shore jigging and big saltwater.
The C prefix
A C before the size means compact: a bigger spool fitted to a smaller, lighter body. A C3000 gives you 3000-size line capacity on a 2500-size body. This is one of the most useful things Shimano does and it is nearly invisible to buyers who cannot read the code.
Spool depth
Shimano marks spool depth with a letter before the gear code: SSS (special shallow), SS (super shallow), S (shallow), M (medium-deep), and no letter for the standard spool. Shallow spools exist because fine PE braid does not need 200 m of backing — a C2000S holds the right amount of 0.6 PE without wasting line or weight.
This is the one that catches people out. In a code like C3000MHG, the M is the spool, not the gear. It reads C body + 3000 size + medium-deep spool + high gear. There is no "medium high gear" ratio — the depth letter and the gear letters simply sit next to each other.
Gear ratio letters
- PG — Power Gear. Lowest ratio, most cranking power, slowest retrieve. Good for deep jigging and heavy lures.
- (no letter) — standard ratio.
- HG — High Gear. Faster pickup, the most common choice for lure fishing.
- XG — Extra High Gear. Fastest; good for taking up slack quickly, harder work under load.
You may also see DH for a double handle. So a full code such as Stella C3000SDHHG unpacks as: Stella family, compact body, 3000 spool, shallow spool, double handle, high gear.
How to read a Daiwa reel code
Daiwa's modern spinning reels use the LT platform, and the code runs: model year → family name → LT → size → spool depth → gear ratio.
LT — Light and Tough
LT is Daiwa's since-2018 platform: a lighter body with a bigger, shallower spool ("Air Spool") and the Air Rotor. If a Daiwa reel says LT, it is on the current architecture. Some premium models such as the AIRITY and LUVIAS ST are also marked ST for the magnesium/carbon "super tough" body variants.
Size and spool depth
1000, 2000, 2500, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000 as you would expect. Then the depth letter: S shallow, SS extra shallow, D deep, nothing for standard. So LT2500S is a shallow-spool 2500.
The C for compact
Daiwa also does the bigger-spool-on-a-smaller-body trick, marked with a C in the suffix. LT5000-CXH is a 5000-capacity spool on a compact body, with an extra-high gear ratio.
Gear ratio letters
- P — Power, lowest ratio.
- (no letter) — standard.
- H — High gear.
- XH — Extra high gear.
QD — Quick Drag
QD means Quick Drag: roughly a single turn from slack to fully locked, instead of the usual several. Popular for trout and for anglers who want to change drag fast mid-fight.
