PE 0.8, PE 1.5, #2.0 — the number on a Japanese braid is a diameter, not a breaking strain. Here is what each size actually tests at, using the real ratings of 698 braids, and how to match a leader to it.
What the PE number actually measures
The number on a Japanese braid — PE 0.8, PE 1.5 — is not a breaking strain. It is a diameter standard, from the Japanese gō (号) sizing system that also governs hooks and leader.
The standard dates to 1947, when Toray fixed 1号 at a monofilament diameter of 0.165 mm; the Japan Fishing Tackle Manufacturers Association later formalised it across line types. That is the whole definition. Nothing in it refers to how much load the line will take.
Breaking strain is a separate figure the maker prints alongside it, and it depends on how many strands the line is woven from (X4, X8, X12), the quality of the fibre and the coating. Two PE 1.0 lines from different makers can differ by a lot.

Look at the range column. PE 1.0 runs from 4 lb to 24 lb depending on the line. That is the whole point: if you buy on the PE number alone you can be out by a factor of five. The PE number tells you what the line will feel like through the rings and how much a spool will hold. The lb figure printed next to it tells you what it will hold.
Buy on the PE number for fit. Buy on the lb rating for strength. Always read both.
You will still see the old rule of thumb that a braid breaks at about ten times its PE number — PE 2.0 ≈ 20 lb. It is a useful floor and nothing more. Our own figures above run well above it, because modern eight-strand braids are considerably stronger for a given diameter than the four-strand lines the rule was coined for. Treat 10× as the worst case, not the expectation.
X4, X8 and X12
The X number is how many strands are braided together.
- X4 — four strands. Rougher surface, noisier through the rings, more abrasion resistant, cheaper. A sensible choice for rough ground.
- X8 — eight strands. Rounder, smoother, quieter, casts further for the same diameter. The default for most lure fishing.
- X12 — twelve strands. Smoother still and usually the thinnest for a given strength, at a price.
For the same PE size, an X8 will usually be stronger and cast better than an X4, and an X4 will usually last longer over rock.
Matching a leader
Braid has no stretch and poor abrasion resistance, so it is fished with a mono or fluorocarbon leader. The usual starting point is a leader of roughly 2 to 3 times the braid's breaking strain for lure fishing over clean ground, and heavier again over rock or where fish have abrasive mouths.

Note that Japanese leader is often sold in the same gō sizes, so a "#5" fluorocarbon leader is a diameter, not a strength, exactly as with braid.
