Warranty and servicing

Most of the reels and rods we sell are Japanese-market (JDM) models, ordered from Japan for you. This page explains what you can expect if something goes wrong, and who to contact.

Your rights are with us

You buy from Britannic Trade Ltd, a UK company. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, everything we sell must be of satisfactory quality, fit for its purpose and as described. This applies to every item, JDM or not. It does not depend on a maker's warranty.

  • A fault in the first 30 days: you can reject the item for a full refund within 30 days of delivery. You can ask for a repair or a replacement instead. Then the 30 days stop until you get the item back. If it is still faulty, you have at least 7 days from then to reject it.
  • A fault after 30 days: we will repair or replace the item. If that is not possible, or it does not fix the fault, you can have a refund or a price reduction.
  • The first 6 months: a fault that appears in this time is treated as there from the start, unless we can show it was not.
  • After 6 months: you may need to show that the fault was there when the item was delivered. If you then choose a refund, the law allows a fair deduction for the use you have had.

If a repair or a replacement takes too long, or causes you serious inconvenience, you can have a refund or a price reduction instead.

When an item is faulty, we pay the postage. Normal wear and tear, accidents and misuse are not faults.

The maker's warranty and JDM models

A JDM model is made for sale in Japan. Shimano and Daiwa run their warranties by region, through their own dealers. This is what they say:

  • Shimano: its warranty for Europe, the Middle East and Africa covers reels and rods made by or for Shimano Europe and bought in that region. Claims go through an authorised Shimano dealer. See Shimano's warranty policy.
  • Daiwa: its warranty terms for Europe, from Daiwa Germany, cover only Daiwa products that Daiwa Germany distributes through Daiwa retailers in Europe. See Daiwa's warranty terms.
  • In Japan: Shimano's repair terms and Daiwa's warranty conditions apply in Japan only.

So Shimano's UK and European warranty does not cover a JDM Shimano reel or rod from us, and Daiwa's European terms do not cover a JDM Daiwa model. We are not an authorised Shimano or Daiwa dealer. If a maker's warranty matters to you, ask us about that product before you order, whatever the brand. Your legal rights against us, set out above, always apply.

If something goes wrong

  1. Email info@britannictrade.co.uk with your order number, a short description and a photo or short video of the problem.
  2. Tell us if you would like a refund, a replacement or a repair.
  3. Wait for our reply before you send anything. We will tell you where to send the item.

A replacement or a repair can take longer than a refund, because the new item or a part may have to come from Japan.

Changed your mind? You can cancel your order before it arrives. After it arrives, you have until 14 days after the day it is delivered to tell us. See our refund policy.

Spare parts and servicing

  • We do not sell spare parts for reels or rods at the moment.
  • Before you have a reel serviced anywhere, check that the workshop can get parts for your JDM model.
  • If you think a reel is faulty, contact us before anyone opens it.
  • After sea fishing, rinse your reel gently with fresh water and let it dry.
  • On Daiwa reels with Mag Sealed parts, never oil or open those parts. Daiwa says oil can affect the magnetic oil inside.
