How to choose terminal tackle

Match your components to technique, target species and conditions. A few starting points:

By technique: fine wire and lighter wire gauge for LRF and finesse perch/chub work; heavier forged hooks, strong split rings and assist hooks for shore jigging, surfcasting and big pollack or cod.
By species: abrasion-resistant leaders and tough swivels for wrasse and cod over rough ground; sharp, light-gauge patterns for shy mullet, trout and grayling.
By conditions: upgrade swivels, snaps and rings when running heavy metal jigs in tide; downsize discreet hardware in clear, low-flow venues.

The JDM angle matters here. Japanese terminal tackle is known for needle-sharp chemically honed points, refined wire tempering, corrosion-resistant finishes and tight tolerances on swivels and rings — refinement that translates to better hook-ups and fewer failures.
